How to Start Running When You Hate Running

A gentle beginner plan built around walking breaks and zero pressure.

How to Start Running When You Hate Running

Many people decide they hate running after one painful attempt at going too fast for too long. Starting slower changes everything.

Use run-walk intervals

Begin with one minute of easy jogging followed by two minutes of walking. Repeat for 20 minutes. Each week, add a little more jogging time.

Go slower than you think

You should be able to talk in full sentences while you run. If you cannot, slow down.

Invest in good shoes

A running store can help you find a pair that fits your stride. It makes a big difference in comfort and injury prevention.

Make it enjoyable

  • Save a favorite podcast for runs only.
  • Pick scenic routes.
  • Run with a friend or a local beginner group.
You are a runner the moment you decide to go for a run. Speed has nothing to do with it.
